Sacred stillness: resting, reflecting, & reconnecting with God

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

– Psalm 46:10

This month, schoolwork joins the rhythm of softball clinics, practices, and games.  In these busy times, it’s easy to overlook one of the most powerful tools that God gave us – rest

As our family heads out on vacation this week, I’m reminded that rest, reflection, and prayer aren’t pauses in progress – they’re essential to our growth.  Sometimes we need to step aside so that we can step forward with renewed strength and deeper faith.

Rest Is Not Weakness – It’s Worship

God designed rest as a gift, and He modeled it for us in the Creation.  Even in the busiest seasons, He calls us to pause and trust Him.  Encourage your athlete to embrace these rest days – not just for recovery, but for renewal.  Rest reminds us that our true strength comes from Him.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

– Matthew 11:28

Reflection Builds Resilience

Taking time to reflect helps athletes grow from every experience – win or lose.  It’s in quiet moments that lessons sink in and character is shaped.  Ask your player: What did I learn today?  How did I respond?  Where did I see God at work?  These questions turn games into growth.

“As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart.”

– Proverbs 27:19

Prayer Powers Performance

Prayer isn’t just for church – it’s for the locker room, the dugout, the batter’s box, and the car ride home.  It centers, calms, and connects us to the One who knows our hearts.  Encourage your athlete to pray before games, during tough moments, and after victories.  Prayer keeps our perspective clear and our purpose strong.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

– Philippians 4:6

Final Thoughts

As our schedules get busier, expectations get higher, and pressures get more intense – let’s remind our athletes (and ourselves) that rest is not retreat – it’s renewal.  Reflection is not hesitation – it’s growth.  Prayer is not a backup plan – it’s our foundation.  When we embrace sacred stillness, we create space for God to restore our strength, refocus our hearts, and remind us of who we are in Him.  Let every pause be purposeful, every quiet moment be holy, and every breath be a step closer to grace.
